Tying a haybag, 10/10/2009

Yes, haybags are hard to tie up and get down. I use a double ended snap. Just run the tie down through the bottom and back up to the eye you are tying to or if camping loop over a branch or your tie line and hook to the bottom ring. This keeps it high enough that they don't get their feet in it and its EASY.

The cord hay nets are recomended because they hold so much hay (I've fit 5 flakes before) and are great for traveling with more than one meal. However, only about 25% gets in my horses mouth, the rest ends up on the ground where they cant reach it if they're tied to the trailer. The holes in the netting are way too spread out and everything falls through. I know they're cheap and I suppose it would be nice to have one around just for a spare, but I'd really recommend spending a little more to get a hay bag instead of a hay net. They're also very confusing to tie and are so slippery that sometimes they come untied all together and fall from the trailer which just causes a problem if the horses are tied too short to reach the ground. They also snag and just wear out too fast.
