Why did you choose this?

I have 2 horses: 1st. a tough keeper that likes to toss his grass everywhere and then not eat dirty grass, this clearly helps reduce waste and he will eat "clean" grass from net. 2nd. an easy keeper who likes to gorge, this is an easy solution to slow his eating. I love my freedom feeders, this is my 3rd one and I'm sure there are more in the future.

Have 5 of these in the 1.5 inch. They are very durable and work well - hay lasts much longer and there is very little waste. I am hoping the 1 inch will slow them down even more, but price has gone way up so can only get 1. I fill them all up at once and then have hay ready to hang for many days.

How easy are they to fill? thinking about getting this for my horse at a boarding barn, but need it to be VERY easy or the staff won't use it.

Best Answer: The freedom feeder is very easy to fill and I have used a feeder like this for about 5 years. I bought this size because it looked like it would hold almost an entire bale of hay like my previous one but it is not that big. It can probably hold 4 flakes of our coastal hay. So, I don't think it would be a big deal for the staff to fill. I unfortunately made the mistake of purchasing the bigger one as well because my previous large one filled from what appears to the top in this photo however, the biggest one fills from one end (for an entire bale)--this one is a pain to fill but the top loading one is easy. I had to add an extra rope through the top woven around the openings because my smart little horse figured out how to stick his nose in between the ties on the top and just eat all he wanted. I would recommend these feeders.
