Nice little leadline saddle, 4/24/2011

A little spendy for something that is going to be outgrown fairly quickly if you only have one little equestrian, but I love the suede seat. Henri De Rivel makes matching little oakbark stirrup leathers and I bought the cutest little 3 1/2 inch peacock irons, and my saddle came with a nice grab strap. No matter how I fussed with it though, it really does not fit my mare that my son rides, at all. The tree was clearly intended for wide-backed ponies and not full-sized Morgans with flat toplines, but hey, it's a leadline saddle and kids only weigh around 40 pounds. I am scratching my head wondering if the fit of this saddle is really that critical, but I'm sure it will fit ponies better than horses. I'll just put a thick pad under it next time... My mare didn't seem to mind the fit. The one thing that I hated was that the billets are just a bit too wide for the buckles on my girth, which has standard roller buckles. I had a devil of a time girthing it up, so I think I am going to take it to my local cobbler and have the billets trimmed just a bit. That may just be my saddle though. I would have rated it with more stars had it not been for the price and the issue with the billets. I also expected it to fit my mare a little better. Not sure what a "half tree" is compared to a regular tree. Maybe it will flex some as it breaks in and will fit my mare better? Don't know, but the fit was a bit disappointing. The billets are also pretty thick, so they tend to push out the saddle flap. Not so important for leadlining, but I can see it interfering with the little rider's leg as he or she learns aids and ventures off of the lead rope. Again, that might resolve itself with breaking in, or the child graduating to a larger traditional English saddle. On the plus side, the leather and suede are nice quality, the construction is really nice, and my son was very secure in the seat, even on a full-sized horse.
