HAY BAGS vs $$$ bags, 12/27/2011

sassy from Kentucky

I love them. Have 6 bags and use all year long camping and at home around the barn. My bags are 7 years old and still going. Yes some gets on the ground but that happens with the best bags and I have used the $$$ bags. THe $$$ bags always rip. I tie them from tress, my trailer, barn post, ect. I do make sure I buy one where the top will open up at least 36 inches so that I can fill them up using a box, pail, bucket, I have been using them since 1995 and have not had the first horse of mine get a hoof hung in them. I have cut fellow neighboring horses out of them camping but that can happen with even the $$$ bags for they have holes in them also. Sassy Im getting ready to buy extra ones since I gave one away.

Tying a haybag, 10/10/2009
Joann from Michigan

Yes, haybags are hard to tie up and get down. I use a double ended snap. Just run the tie down through the bottom and back up to the eye you are tying to or if camping loop over a branch or your tie line and hook to the bottom ring. This keeps it high enough that they don't get their feet in it and its EASY.

Dosent Hold Hay, 5/12/2009

from WA

The cord hay nets are recomended because they hold so much hay (I've fit 5 flakes before) and are great for traveling with more than one meal. However, only about 25% gets in my horses mouth, the rest ends up on the ground where they cant reach it if they're tied to the trailer. The holes in the netting are way too spread out and everything falls through. I know they're cheap and I suppose it would be nice to have one around just for a spare, but I'd really recommend spending a little more to get a hay bag instead of a hay net. They're also very confusing to tie and are so slippery that sometimes they come untied all together and fall from the trailer which just causes a problem if the horses are tied too short to reach the ground. They also snag and just wear out too fast.
