Tough-1 Snuggit Blanket Specifications:
  •     Measuring Instructions - Stand your horse as square as possible, measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If you horse ends up measuring between sizes always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.
  •     Washing Instructions - Machine wash with cold water – Gentle cycle with mild detergent. Air Dry or Machine Dry/No Heat
  •     Horses Turned Outside without Shelter - Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry, however if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours your horse may still get wet especially in the neck and tail areas.
When using a blanket or sheet it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat, when a blanket is too heavy the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.

When selecting a blanket ensure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew or rub on blankets or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group.
Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly, if a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear.  For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear.
Certain types of fencing such as barbwire or foreign objects such as nails will easily tear any blanket no matter what the denier, always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

Best Answer: There is no standard size. Every horse is different you would have to measure the horse.

waterproof? Is this blanket waterproof?
starr s on Oct 20, 2014
Best Answer: Yes this turnout is waterproof for the most part. I love these blankets and they are the only ones I want for my horses. Mine are out in the elements about 97% of the time. They hold up great and keeps them warm. If it rains nonstop for days they might get a little damp around their withers but nothing real bad, but underneath for the whole body they stay dry as a bone. Hope this helps!

what sise would fit a 6 year old paint mare?
A shopper on Oct 7, 2014
Best Answer: 1) Stand your horse square.
2) Place your measuring tape at the center of the chest.
3) Lay the tape across the widest part of the shoulder and hip, at an angle towards the tail.
4) Go from the middle of the chest to the middle of the tail just one side and that measurement is the horse's blanket size.

is this the heaviest blanket for the winter?
smalls on Nov 19, 2014
Best Answer: Hi Brooke,
I don't know if this is the company's heaviest blanket but it sure is nice! It is heavy, well made, and longer on the sides than other blankets I've used. It has multiple adjustments for a perfect fit and my horse loves it. It appears tough and should last awhile. I live in central Colorado and we recently had a change in temps by 50 degrees with wind and snow. The highs were 0 to -5 and my horse was very comfortable. You could probably layer since it is of ample size. Hope this helps!

Would this blanket alone be good for Minnesota winter where it can reach -40 and maybe -50? My horse is coming from Missouri so its definitely a climate change. Or should I get something to go underneath?
SweetieSweets on Aug 21, 2015
Best Answer: The heaviest ones are stable blankets, but please keep in mind they're not weather-resistant or designed for turnout.
300 grams of fill is a decently heavy blanket. If your horse has to acclimate to a harsher climate, however, you should definitely have layers ready to keep up with weather changes. A liner is always a good idea to have ready, and it can also double as a cooler. I find that neck covers noticeably improve the warmth value of whatever combination the horse is wearing. And, a spare blanket is never a bad idea, both for really crazy temperatures and as insurance for a regular blanket that suddenly becomes unwearable if the horse rolls in water or manages to destroy it.

Does this hold up well?
Kathleen G on Dec 23, 2014
Best Answer: We just bought this blanket this year but so far it seems to be holding up well. My wife liked it enough that we bought another one just a lighter fill weight for one of our other horses that needed a new blanket this year. She has been wearing the lighter one daily and has layed down and rolled in it and it's holding up well. I am happy with it. Hope this helps

how do i know what size to purchase?
A shopper on Nov 21, 2015
Best Answer: Stand your horse as square as possible. Measure from the center of the chest along the side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If your horse ends up measuring between sizes, choose the one closest to your measurement unless your horse is particularly big-bodied.
Measuring is usually best done with a helper and a soft or cloth measuring tape. Take the measurement twice to be sure.
On this blanket, the line where the two colors meet is exactly where to measure your horse.

A shopper on Nov 4, 2014

My Older horse is not keeping his weight where I'd like it and needs protection from weather 25 degree's and lower. Is this blanket going to be too warm compared to a a lesser fill? It is the wet snow and freezing rain and wind that concerns me the most. PA He does have access to enclosed barn with smaller door, but prefers to be outside.
A shopper on Dec 5, 2015
Best Answer: Every horse is different but if your horse already has a thick winter coat this blanket will probably be borderline too warm for him. We offer this same blanket with a 200 gram polyfill which may work better for him. You know your horse best so if he just needs a little extra help staying warm I would go with the 200 gram polyfill blanket. I hope this helps you decide. Thanks.

what is the best winter blanket?
A shopper on Nov 19, 2015
Best Answer: This one. Tough 1 is the best brand that can handle sub zero temps and bites and kicks from other horses. My horse has a small neck so this added feature of a snuggit neck helps keep his blanket in place. MAke sure you use with leg straps otherwise it can fall to one side and they'll shred it.
