Product Summary:

Best Friend® Deluxe Grazing Muzzle

Best Friend® Deluxe Grazing Muzzles are recommended by equine health professionals to prevent as well as treat laminitis, founder, obesity, colic, and other diet-related diseases. The small opening in the bottom allows horses a limited amount of grass, yet unlimited water. Rather than being restricted to a non-grass environment to control intake, horses are free to exercise and socialize as part of the herd. A combination grazing muzzle and breakaway halter all in one, the design utilizes plastic side-release buckles as its breakaway feature. Each Deluxe muzzle comes with a spare buckle that can be easily attached in the field.

To use, adjust the muzzle to the horse using the same principles as the fit of a comfortable halter. Leave approximately one inch between the horse's mouth and the inside of the muzzle. The muzzle has a roomy fit to allow for chewing. You should be able to fit two to three fingers sideways between your horse's face and the muzzle. It's so easy to use, and costs less than purchasing a separate breakaway halter. The rubber bottom in the grazing muzzle is approximately ¼-inch thick.

Product Benefits:

  • Horse is happier as a result of not being kept away from both grass and outdoor buddies
  • Horse can get the required exercise (the average horse covers one mile per hour while grazing)
  • Disease prevention is easier and less expensive than a visit by the vet
  • All synthetic materials make it lightweight, rot-resistant, and well ventilated
  • Padded noseband helps resist rubbing and chafing
  • Durable, comfortable, and safe
  • Recommended by John Lyon’s Perfect Horse and The Horse Journal
  • Reduces bedding bill and stall-cleaning time
  • Peace of mind knowing your horse is happier and healthier

Large is large for sure.
Although we had some fittment and adjustment issues we are having a better day today. Day one my horse broke the clip so Im glad there is an extra sent with bucket. This is the second grazing muzzle I have ordered, same brand as before but paid more at another site last year.

Best grazing muzzle
I have been using this brand for years now. It really prevents the horses from getting laminitis when the grass is rich.

Very helpful for horses that are easy keepers.
I tried another muzzle that would not stay on any of my horses, because of the velcro fasteners. These are adjustable for a range of sizes. Would highly recommend them to enable foundered horses to graze with the herd. Keep an eye out for the opening; it will wear over time.

It is HUGE, and Low Quality :-(
This thing is big enough for a draft horse, so first of all, if you have a normal or smaller horse, don't bother. And it is pretty poor quality - the throat snap popped open when my mare rolled, and she very easily slipped out of it. There are a lot of other options in this price range that are better quality and better fit.

Great product for my horse
I ordered this for my horse that tends to founder easily on the new spring grass. I was hesitant this would even stay on since she's able to somehow get her halter off when turned out in the field. The muzzle is working exactly as I need it to. I don't have to put her in a dry lot and she can stay in the field with the other horses without over eating. The average horse size does fit a little loose on her but I think the Cob size would have been too small. I am very pleased with the product and my horse doesn't seem to mind it being on at all.

These work great!
I really like these muzzles. They are easy to adjust and the stay on well.

Great Muzzle
This was the 3rd muzzle we tried and it has worked great. It made it through the entire summer and still in good condition.

Good quality grazing muzzle.
This grazing muzzle in horse size fits my Arabians & Thoroughbred. I appreciate the replacement buckle, that is what usually breaks.

This muzzle has kept my Morgan from foundering again.
I have been using Best Friend Muzzles for 4 years. After my Morgan pony foundered, I had to keep her in a small paddock with little grass separate from the other horses and she started getting depressed. Now she can wear the muzzle and go out grazing with her friends without over eating and does not gain the weight that led to her founder. I gave the quality four stars because I feel that the muzzle has gotten thinner which makes it easier for her to get off. The price is a bit high but worth every penny if it saves your horse's life.

Staying alive.
My horse is insulin resistant and could be labelled an easy keeper. She's actually an over-eater who has to wear her Best Friends grazing muzzle 24/7 from first grass in the spring to the last grass in the fall/early winter. The muzzle helps to keep her weight down and thus she remains sound as her overeating has previous lead to founder and white line disease. During the grazing season she is on very rich pasture and gets no grain. The muzzles keep her alive. Just wish that the material in the bottom of the muzzle, where the small feeding hole is, would be thicker/stronger. She's such an aggressive eater that she wears the hole out making it larger. I go through 3-4 muzzles a year.

My easy keeper Paso Fino has issues with laminitis very quickly on spring and fall grass. This muzzle has helped to keep her sound. She wears it 24/7 without difficulty.

Allows my too heavy horses to graze with the herd. They do not mind the muzzles. They actually lower their heads for the muzzles. Just make sure to adjust them so that they are comfortable for your horse.

My TWH needs the large size and what a great price too.
CATHERINE G on May 25, 2014
I purchased this grazing muzzle due to my mare becoming overweight in her pasture. I no longer can feel her ribs even as I press down on her sides. I was torn between this on and the cheaper grazing muzzle but after reading reviews there was a rubber smell and durability issue I read others speaking of. To be safe I bout the more expensive muzzle recomended my John Lyons and the Journal. I feel this grazing muzzle is a guarantee knowing what it's backed by. THanks.

My horse has fondered, and we must restrict his intake of grass. This appeared to be a good muzzle, and the reviews were mostly good.
LOREEN F on Apr 16, 2014
My horse needed to lose weight due to severe founders, didn't know if he would live. I put this on him when in the pasture in the spring and summer. He's lost weight, now he's maintaing his weight . Him still being alive is a miracle. Yay muzzle

How far from the horse 's nose do you place the muzzle?
First Name L on Jul 1, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It fits my Haflinger gelding with about an inch between his nose and the grazing muzzle. He is a much happier guy, as now he can go out with the other horses. I do weave a small braid behind his poll and attach it to the top of the halter with string to prevent him from rubbing it off over his ears. So far it has stayed on. I do notice the hole at the bottom of the muzzle is getting a bit larger (lol).
Does this allow a good intake of air?
bob r on Dec 5, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have used this exact muzzle for my gelding in the summertime in Texas and he seemed to do fine and is also able to get water through it. We do not leave it on 24/7 though as it does rub hair off after a while. They work for limiting grass intake and in my opinion in the case of laminitis can be lifesavers!! Also have two similar ones in miniature horse size tgayvdo just fine on my fat little ones!
I was just recommended a muzzle for a mammoth donkey who is a big guy at 14 1/2 hands. We have too much grass in our pasture and locking him up for the entire season (due to his somewhat chronic tendency for laminitis) is difficult. Especially because our Jennae, is a regular sized donkey who has never had problems. Any ideas on what size muzzle I should get for him? Thank you
Kathy I on May 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Here is the sizing information:
Cob: Large ponies or small horses, such as Morgans or Arabians, 500-800 lbs, 13-14 hands
24" circumference x 7" depth
Horse: Average Size horses, such as Quarter Horses, 800-1100 lbs, 15-16 hands
26" circumference x 7 1/2" depth
Large Horse: Warmbloods and large-faced horses, 1100-1600 lbs, 17 hands and over
28" circumference x 8" depth
The muzzle should be adjusted so you can fit a finger on each side, and the bottom should be about one inch from the lips. Please keep an eye on him when first worn, as many animals will either not drink or take a long time to figure out how to drink while wearing this muzzle.
I need a muzzle for a mini horse. Would the deluxe sheep one work? He likes to bite me when I pony him.

BEST ANSWER: Best Friends make a stall muzzle, that is designed for what you want to do. "Best Friend Soft Stall Muzzle" costs about 16.00. I see that horse.com doesn't carry it. So you will might have to find a different location that does. Just Google "Best Friend Soft Stall Muzzle" or
call horse.com to see if they can get it for you. This one comes in different sizes, and
designed to keep horses from biting you and stallions in breeding to keep them from
biting the mares.
If the size is too big, would I be able to make it smaller by punching some holes on the halter pieces?
A shopper on Mar 28, 2014
BEST ANSWER: We have a large Welsh pony and last year we borrowed a horse size muzzle from a friend. We were abl to make it fit him by sjortening the crown and cheek pieces. They do not have holes - just a buckle that the strap slides through (on the crown as well as the sides). The basket over his nose on the horse size ws a bit big butit stil did the job. This year we bought him the muzzle in the cob size and it fits perectly. Bottom line: the muzzle has a lot of room for adjustment, and even our larg pony could wear the horse size, though the cob fits him better.

Hope that helps!
