These have been a great relief after the unusual harsh winter weather in South Texas. Bought some for the horses and now we put one in the trough for cows and do not have to chop ice again. Thanks Horse.Com.

Safe for 50 gallons in Rubbermaid trough?
nancy w on Dec 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We put ours first in a porcelain bathtub not sure how many gallons that was, now we have it in a 100 gallon Rubbermaid trough. As long as there is always water in the trough it should be ok. If the water gets below the heater that’s when it can burn up. We have 4 horses and a pony and it has done really good in the 100 gallons. The most important thing is to always keep the trough full.
Can this be used safely with a extension cord?
tewiba on Jan 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The information states not to use an extension cord but I don't have power by my water tanks and am forced to use an extension cord. I use a outdoor compatible cord, wrap the connectors for weather proofing and rig the cord so animals can't get caught up or bite and chew on it. It has served me well. I wish the manufacturers would make longer cords to eliminate the extensions.
Safe for 50 gallon rubbermaid plastic trough?
nancy w on Dec 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure about a 50 gallon tank. I put mine in a 300 gallon plastic tank and it works pretty well. I wish the cord was longer and then it could go into the middle of the tank. At 5 degrees there is some ice in the tank, but not too bad and easy to break.
Is it safe to use this in a metal tank?
Kristi S on Nov 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I use mine in enamel metal bathtubs with a protective cover board. The guard around the element keeps that element off of the metal so it doesn't heat the metal up. Proper electrical precautions MUST be followed to keep from potential grounding out on the metal. If this is done and checked on a regular basis, you should be just fine.
How many amps?
ClayL on Oct 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Don't know ...just use a regular outdoor 120 outlet [ are they amps?] and the water tub, about 30 gal, stayed thawed thru all the cold weather. In fact sometimes too warm since my horse prefers cool water.
How many watts ?
A shopper on Nov 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: 1500 watt. Second season on my first one. Keeps a 50 gallon tank ice free.
