Product Summary:

Farm Innovators 1500w Universal Drainplug De-Icer

This de-icer is thermostatic-controlled to operate only when necessary and features an automatic shut-off. When water temperatures fall to (approximately) 35 degrees, the de-icer will turn on. It will then shut off automatically until water temperature falls toward freezing again. The unit is completely hidden from the animal, and suspended in the tank so it cannot come in contact with the bottom or side. Easy to install and requiring no special tools, it fits tanks via plug head through most drain plug openings on stock tanks.

Features:

  • 1500 watts
  • Thermostatically controlled
  • Drain plug de-icer
  • For use with any size plastic, rubber, or metal tank up to 300 gallons
  • Fits any Behlan, Freeland, Hastings, Rubbermaid, or Applegate tank

Hard working deicer
I have been using this drainplug deicer for my water troughs for many years. They work well, temp sense when needed, and keep troughs at a comfortable drinking temperature. Do use electricity, but any deicer will. Need to have a good high duty extension cord. But I have had very good luck with these heaters. They keep my horses drinking in our extremely cold Michigan winters!

Product really works
This was easy to install into my Rubbermaid trough. Was able to set it so item did not sit directly on the bottom of the tub (I was concerned when the deicer came on, whether it would melt the trough if it was touching). Filled it with water, no leakage. Checked it in the morning and there was no ice. It does not heat the water, but the water temperature is not ice cold. The horses are staying hydrated now. Prior to purchasing this product, I tried suggestions posted on the internet to keep ice from forming, such as balls etc. Did not work. After having to break the ice each morning last year, I had an outlet installed this summer. This item really really makes a difference. I can now disconnect the water hoses from the automatic waterers, which are attached to the outside fencing, for the winter so I won't have to worry about water hoses bursting.

This item came in a very timely manner and fit in our metal stock tank. Haven't had to use it yet due to warmer weather this year but think it will work great.

Had to return
I was sent a defective tank de-icer and had to go through the hassle of returning. Very easy to install, but the product never turned on once plugged in. Very disappointing that I had to waste 150 gallons of water to remove from the tank.

The product is faulty
We had to purchase replacements to obtain a working product. Due to the length of time needed for shipping replacements, we purchased additional units from the local farm store. However their units were also faulty. We bought an alternate type heater and it is working fine. Stay away from this type tank heater.

Easy to install
Installed it by myself, works like a charm, horses have drinkable water instead of an ice block.

I have had this deicer for years in our horses' water stock tank and may need to replace it next winter. It works great, especially through this past long Indiana Winter!!

Does this turn on and off when water temp reaches a certain temp?
A shopper on Nov 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: yes it is automatically temp controlled . I believe it's 32 degrees. I have always used this type of heater in my troughs. Love them. Make sure to use a good heavy gauge extension cord, from your electrical source.
Can you use the drain plug de-icer with a heavy duty extension cord and does it have to be grounded?
A shopper on Oct 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The manufacturer does not recommend using an extension cord. That being said, I know of very few people who don't use an extension cord. I make sure that the connections are protected and waterproof and use at least a 15 amp one. The plug is 3 pronged, so yes, grounded. Grounding when electricity is combined with water is always a good idea.
how much does it cost a month to us this deicer?
Tina M on Feb 19, 2014
BEST ANSWER: While it is not possible for me to pinpoint the exact cost of electricity for the deicer, I would guess that, depending upon your Kw/hr costs, it will run about $15 to $20 per month for continuous operation. I have multiple units for different pastures and my electric bill doesn't vary by much, so I believe that the numbers are correct.
Does it thread into the tank?
A shopper on Oct 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You remove the threaded plug only, not the entire bulkhead. The heater does thread into the rest of the bulkhead. Word of advice, you may need to tighten the outer ring to get a tight seal.
Does it have a warranty?
A shopper on Feb 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The box says 1 year limited warranty. We purchased our second one after several years of outdoor use in our 150 gallon stock tank for our horses during 4 months of cold Indiana winters. We take it out, clean it, then store it each Spring until November. The cord is short so we connect it to an extension cord to the barn, using a "Cord Connect Water-Tight Cord Lock" also purchased here on this site.
