Product Summary:

Farm Innovators 1500w Universal Drainplug De-Icer

This de-icer is thermostatic-controlled to operate only when necessary and features an automatic shut-off. When water temperatures fall to (approximately) 35 degrees, the de-icer will turn on. It will then shut off automatically until water temperature falls toward freezing again. The unit is completely hidden from the animal, and suspended in the tank so it cannot come in contact with the bottom or side. Easy to install and requiring no special tools, it fits tanks via plug head through most drain plug openings on stock tanks.

  • Drain plug de-icer
  • For use with any size plastic, rubber, or metal tank up to 300 gallons

Does this turn on and off when water temp reaches a certain temp?
A shopper on Nov 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: yes it is automatically temp controlled . I believe it's 32 degrees. I have always used this type of heater in my troughs. Love them. Make sure to use a good heavy gauge extension cord, from your electrical source.
Can you use the drain plug de-icer with a heavy duty extension cord and does it have to be grounded?
A shopper on Oct 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The manufacturer does not recommend using an extension cord. That being said, I know of very few people who don't use an extension cord. I make sure that the connections are protected and waterproof and use at least a 15 amp one. The plug is 3 pronged, so yes, grounded. Grounding when electricity is combined with water is always a good idea.
how much does it cost a month to us this deicer?
Tina M on Feb 19, 2014
BEST ANSWER: While it is not possible for me to pinpoint the exact cost of electricity for the deicer, I would guess that, depending upon your Kw/hr costs, it will run about $15 to $20 per month for continuous operation. I have multiple units for different pastures and my electric bill doesn't vary by much, so I believe that the numbers are correct.
Does it thread into the tank?
A shopper on Oct 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You remove the threaded plug only, not the entire bulkhead. The heater does thread into the rest of the bulkhead. Word of advice, you may need to tighten the outer ring to get a tight seal.
Does it have a warranty?
A shopper on Feb 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The box says 1 year limited warranty. We purchased our second one after several years of outdoor use in our 150 gallon stock tank for our horses during 4 months of cold Indiana winters. We take it out, clean it, then store it each Spring until November. The cord is short so we connect it to an extension cord to the barn, using a "Cord Connect Water-Tight Cord Lock" also purchased here on this site.
