Product with great potential, but needs refining
mesh is so large I really don't consider it a SLOW feeder. Do love that horse eats in a natural position. Sharp edges had to be filed down to avoid injury.

Great slow feeder at a great price!
I did research and shopped for about a month to find the best slow feeder. I didn't want net because it shreds their gums. I didn't want metal grates because it chips their teeth. These Jr. sized slow feeders are perfect. They were reasonably priced enough to buy 2, one for each of my horses outside.

Easy to use hay bin
Great Item. I have been using it with out the netting as it was a little hard to get the netting to fit easily.. So decided to just use it as a feed bin.

Easy to use, keeps my horse's wet hay off the sandy ground. She can't drag it around and waste it any more. She eats every last bite now that its in the slow feeder. Works great! Excellent quality.

Slow Feeder Jr Alert
The junior is a fantastic slow feeder. Make sure that if you're going to buy this feeder that you buy the updated version. Many stores still have the old design. The new version has corners that the top rack can not come out of. Superior design. Two changes I would make:I turn my mares out on a dry lot during the day and bring them into the barn at night. The 3 jrs are out on the dry lot and they are a hassle to bring in out of the rain. I only wish it had an oversized cover that was waterproof so that when it rains the hay not eaten does not spoil. I heard they were coming out with one in the summer. At that point it will be the ultimate slow feeder. I would also make one more change. Create it so it could become a soaker for starchy hay and pull a plug to drain the water. These are fabulous suggestions that I hope are incorporated into future designs.

This Product has been inproved
I purchased 4 of these feeders a few months back and had problems removing the hay rack from the feeder and had to rasp the opening wider as was suggested by other reviewers also had one horse pull the hay rack out of the feeder. Ordered 4 more and had my rasp ready, was very pleased that the feeders now come with a redesigned box with a much wider opening, corners on top to keep the rack in and a water drain hole. Wish I had waited to order the first 4! Was using hay bags before the HCP slow feeders these are much easier to use and the horses waste less hay then my open feed tubs plus the horses seem to enjoy having hay in front of them (most of the horses) 24 hours a day.

inferior compared to the larger one
i've got one of the larger ones, which has been wonderful, with a few minor flaws that can be easily fixed .. but this smaller one is ridiculous .. i have more hay All Over the ground then i did with the mounted wall feeder :( they've swapped out the metal grill for a nylon mesh w/a metal rim (as a gaurd)and it is Way to light weight comes out while eating and the mesh wholes are the same size as the larger metal grill but because it's nylon the horse can get any amount of hay out at a time :( super disappointed .. the large one is great though .. i've already used this so it's to late to ship back and i also figured it would cost more then it's worth to ship back .. still trying to figure out how i can rig something to work because it's useless at it is :( sorry .. save you money .. or buy the larger one!

Love it!
I bought two of these for my horses. They were easy to assemble and hold enough hay for 1-2 meals. One of my horses eats out of it like a dream. Definately prevents hay from getting all over the ground which keeps him from eating sand. The other horse knocks it around a bit and thus has a nick on her face and foot from pushing at the box and turning it over. All in all a great product. Works way better than the slow feed hay nets I have tried in the past and is easier to fill.

Would be wonderful if the grate fit through the slot
I have both the regular and junior sizes, and rub my knuckles raw trying to wrangle the grates in and out through the slots. I will buy a farriers rasp and see about widening the slots. The feeders are a great product; virtually no hay waste or spill. Just don't understand why they continue selling these with poorly fitting grates.

I have the larger feeder and they work out great. I wanted a smaller one I could use in the stall also.

Do horses move and kick feeder around or is there a way to fasten it to a post to make it stable?
A shopper on Aug 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I bought the small feeder saver for my 200 pound miniature horse and its perfect for her. She is not strong enough to move it. However, whenever my full size horse visits her paddock, he flips and rolls the small feeder saver all over the place and I have to drag it back where it belongs when he's done playing. I have the regular size feeder saver for my big horse, and he is able to push it a few feet in either direction but he can't turn it over. You could probably get creative and find a way to anchor it, but it would have to be a temporary attachment so you can sweep behind it now and then.
Overall I love the feeder savers because there is virtually no wasted hay with them.

What are the grates made of?
A shopper on Sep 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is a heavy duty NETTING material that is held in place on the edges... by metal frame work. THE grates in the JR saver is a SLOW FEED BAG!!! not metal like the large one..
