What would be a good size for a 16.3 hand thoroughbred mare? I'm not sure how to size.

BEST ANSWER: Using a piece of twine with a knot tied in one end. Place the string in the horse's mouth with the knot touching the corner of the horse's lips. Do not pull the knot tight into the corner of the horse's mouth - you want it even with the surface of the lips. Grab the string on the opposite side at the corner of the horse's mouth and hold or mark the string at a point even with the outer surface of the lips. The distance between the knot and your mark will be the horse's bit size. Standard horse bit size is 5". A tiny bit loose is better than too tight.
