Product Summary:

Med-Vet Flies-A-Way™

Flies-A-Way™ contains all natural ingredients to help repel biting insects. Diatomaceous Earth, an all-natural element used for over 400 years to help control insects, is added to help prevent fly larvae from hatching in the manure. When fed, the product passes through the horses system into the manure. The sharp edges of the DE cut the outer layer of the insect's exoskeleton, causing dehydration.

Features:

  • All natural
  • Chemical-free

Doesn't work
Have a horse terrified of fly spray. So had hoped this worked. Into our second container. I might as well lit my money on fire and through it up in the air. Product does nothing - have three horses - all different breeds. Doesn't work on any of them.

I've tried them all and this one is the best
I've tried Buggzo, Bug Check, and several others over the years. This one works the fastest, has ingredients that are good for your horse's health, doesn't require a loading dose, and I've never known a horse to refuse it. Within 2 weeks of one 30 g scoop once a day, my mare isn't rubbing herself raw and her skin is has healed especially on her face, her chest and the top of her tail. There are no flies on her and the manure in her stall has no flies on it. You will know it's starting to work when you only see juvenile flies in the vicinity but not on your horse. This is the best product out there if your horse gets itchy in the summer, especially in Southern states like Florida. It saves you money in fly spray, that's for sure.

This product does not work
I have been feeding this to four horses for 4 month now. It does nothing.I saw no difference in fly population. I fed this for three month in North Carolina. Than came back home to FL, where their where no flies to start with and after three weeks of being home they are back... I followed the directions and amounts to be fed to a t. Waste of money.

Looks like it's starting to work.
I've been feeding this to my 4 horses for 3 weeks now. It seems like I'm seeing less flies around the barn and the horses. Just ordered a second bucket.

Great Product
This product works. I use it when the flies start to become a problem and my other fly reduction options need addition support.

Excellent product
Yes there is a strong garlic odor, but within two feedings my 21 year old gelding ate it up with his grain. We are at a big barn and there are no flies in his stall!. Also the garlic smell keeps other pests out of my feed room. Love this product!!!

Good product - horrible smell
I've used feed-through fly control for several years. I decided to try this one because of some other Med-Vet products that I use. The product was good and the horses ate it fine but the smell was horrible and almost made me sick.

My horses won't eat this stuff
I tried this product based on some other "reviews" that horses love it. Not so. My horses will eat everything, including the dewormer, without any fuss. I tried them on this stuff, with oats mixed in, and they refused it. So I tried applesauce, sweet feed and alfalfa sprinkled on top. No way. Then I tried grinding it into a powder and putting it in applesauce, their favorite. No way. it smells so strongly of garlic that the whole tack room stunk, and that is with the plastic bag tied and the lid tightly on.I called MedVet and they were very gracious and said they have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee on their products, so I did get my money back.

It works for my TWH who is allergic to flys. Keeps him in check and I use it with my other two horses also. Plus it is all natural ingredients does not harm them. It also works on the flys outwardly. Thanks for a great product. I also use the 5 +1 HA.

Safe for pregnant/lactating mares with a foal?
A shopper on Jan 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Somewhere on the bucket it should say, whether it is safe for pregnant or lactating mares. It should also say if it safe for the foal and what age it can be fed to the baby. If you can find nothing saying that it is safe for mom and/or baby, I would definitely call my vet and ask him/her if it is safe. Worse come to worse I would not feed it if it says nothing and you can't get a good answer, don't feed it, find a safe product suitable for the mare and foal. They are too precious to take a chance on feeding a product that may or may not be safe for them.
how much do you feed per day per horse?
A shopper on Mar 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi it is clearly defined on the container (or was for me) do not overfeed it, I had one horse colic as I was not being diligent in my portions. I immediately remedied that! I did see a big difference. Hope this helps
It has been said that Diatomacous earth does not cut up the insects when it is wet. When digested isn't it wet from [the digestive juices, water etc in the digestive tract? How can this product be effective? Does it work externally when the manure and Diatomacous earth dry outside of the animal?
j k on Apr 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have been using this for a few years and I noticed that flies will land on my horse, but not bite. I use it all year instead of annually because the garlic has health benefits and my vet said it helps with worm control since I don’t always remember to give my horses their paste wormers on time. I put my mom’s horse on it who was getting chewed up by gnats and losing his mane from scrathing the bites. After being on Flies-A-Way, the gnats were no longer biting him and his mane gree back :)

Is this a pellet or powder?
SARAH B on May 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is a pellet. Kind of strong smelling, but my cows and goats eat it when mixed with a very small amount of sweet feed.
