I am new to this. I want to use this with my portable fence for my ponies while grazing at my neighbors. what do I need with this? or is this all I would need to power the fence.

BEST ANSWER: You need some kind of fencing to go with it. If you want to keep small animals in or out, you can use Powerfields electric netting. If you only need to keep ponies in, you need insulated step-in poles OR you can mount insulators to t-posts or wood posts. (Search for insulators.) If there are no posts, the cheapest way to go is step-in poles.

Then you also need some kind of fencing. Based on experience, I recommend the narrow white tape. It is more visible and doesn't stretch as much in the wind. Some use plain metal. Others use the yellow and white tape or 1/4" rope. It isn't as visible.

For permanent installations you can use the wide tape or the heavy duty rope. But then you need a lot of well-installed posts. If you go to YouTube and search for electric fencing you can find a lot of videos on how to install it and how it works.

99% of horses will never touch a hot fence again after the first time. (You do have to lead them up to learn what it is once.) For those, 2 strands is probably enough. But 3 or 4 are better and if you have ponies that will try to go under, over or through, you might want more. But I kept Thoroughbreds in 2 strands with no problem. And I've seen draft horses in 2 strands.

The best thing about this particular charger is you do NOT need a ground. Poor grounding is the #1 reason an electric fence doesn't work well, especially when it is very dry.

The other thing you need is a fence tester to make sure it is working and not shorted out anywhere. I recommend the ones with 5 lights on them so you can tell how strong the fence charge is and not just whether it is on or off.
Does this come with the battery needed?
