Very Good Blanket for the Price
With a couple of exceptions, I really like this blanket. The first exception is that it is not very long on the sides. Fortunately, my horse has a petite build, so not too much of a problem. But his other blankets are considerably longer on the sides, which provides additional warmth and help keeps them from shifting. I think the sides would be quite short on a stocky horse. The short sides are at least partially responsible for my second exception which is that it shifts very easily on my horse, slipping to one side or the other. Third, I don't like how open the neck is. It makes the blanket rest low on the shoulder and allows air to seep into the gaps. However, on the positive side it is made of very heavy duty, durable material and has nice fittings, The buckles can be difficult to hook/unhook, but that also makes them less likely to come undone. Overall, I'm very pleased with the blanket. I think that if the manufacturer would change the design to have a higher neck with a snugger fit and longer sides it would be great! You can't beat the price. I know that changing the design would increase the price, which would make it less of a bargain. And it's good to have to have an economical option. My horse somehow destroyed his last (fairly expensive) blanket, and I didn't want to buy another expensive one and have the same thing happen. So I was glad to find this very reasonably priced nice quality blanket.

Great blanket
I love this blanket! They last about 3-4 years. The only thing I wish is they made blankets just for an Arabian body style, but this seems to be the best fitting one I have bought! Will buy them again!!

Good Blanket for the Price
Bought this for my 17.1 thoroughbred she is young and narrow but the blanket doesn't come down on the sides as I would have liked. She is always into something and did get a rip in the rump area the first week of wearing it. Sewed up good though and has worked good since. Would recommend if looking for a good blanket for turnout, does not pull/roll to one side when out in the field.

Great so far
They always ask for reviews when my horse has worn it once! I'm writing this based on less than a week of use.I'm loving the Saxon brand. This is a different style from my last set, and so far it seems to be just as good as the high neck turnouts I got last year. The only reason for getting new blankets this year is I bought a new horse that didn't fit last year's stuff, but the old ones are still in excellent condition! My horses are on 24/7 turnout with woods for shelter, so clothes for winter have to be well fitted, warm, dry and durable. Saxon turnouts definitely fit all my requirements without making me blow a paycheck to cover one horse. And the teal plaid looks awesome. The discount for buying more than one makes getting them for the whole herd at once so much better. The only thing I don't like about this style (and Saxon in general) is the lack of Velcro on the chest, but the overlap seems to stay in place pretty well without it.

Is this blanket waterproof?

BEST ANSWER: I've had it out in 2 days of non-stop far, so good.

It's not a high-end blanket, but for the price point, seems quite decent.
How is this blanket different from the Saxon Medium Weight Turn Out blanket?
Jill T on Dec 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I haven't used the blanket you are referencing. I can tell you the blanket I purchased meets my mare's needs for an average Maryland winter. If we were living in a colder climate, I would have purchased something heavier.
I have 2 mustangs about 14.5 hands..size? Also medium weight good for snow wind?? Thanks soo much. alex.

BEST ANSWER: Blanket weight = personal needs. The chart above is good. But... Most of my horses live outside, year round, 3-4 months of sub freezing temps, probably 9 months less than 60* and never wear a blanket. the ones that wear blankets are either suffering in one way or another and need a little help, or horses that I'm riding consistently and I don't want to clean the snow and dirt off before I ride, or horses I'll be showing or selling during the winter I don't want thick winter fuzz. Hence, my blanket weight varies depending on need. 1 mare wears a lightweight turnout as the other horses bite at her- keeps her hide intact, another is high maintenance and wears a heavy weight blanket so her calories go to keeping her weight up instead off keeping warm. My son's rope horse and my cowhorse have med weight blankets w liners so they don't freeze after working up a sweat. Clear as mud?
