The only nutrient in SOURCE that needs evaluation when formulating a feed ration is iodine. (The levels of each of the other minerals and trace elements is so low that it will not imbalance any feed ration design).

SOURCE is a rich source of natural organic iodine. It is particularly useful for those who are seeking to increase iodine levels in a potentially deficient ration.

Caution: even a good thing can be overdone. SOURCE should not be fed at higher than recommended dosage levels, and if you are supplementing with a number of different products, it would be wise to review iodine levels to assure you are not overdoing it.

I use this supp for my senior horses. I have a 29yr old that acts and looks like he is 15yrs old. I'm starting my 19yr old on it this year.

Cheap, but works better then anything else!
I was skeptical of this supplement because it was cheap and it didn't have any joint support vitamins or minerals in it. After doing my own research I've decided to buy this as well as a joint support supplement. My horse is 17 years old and the last few winters he looses weight and muscle tone. I do a lot of Barrel Racing with him and I though last year was going to be the last. Well I was wrong. I started feeding him Focus Senior and in just a months time I have noticed a huge difference in him! He looks great and gained his weight back and is running in the 2D series now!

Wouldn't go without it. Focus SR has been a staple in my seniors diets for years (they are both 30). Highly recommend it!

Horse likes Original Source better
Now that my horse is almost 20, I switched from Original Source to Focus Sr. He doesn't like the taste as well as the Original, so I have divided the dose between two feedings for awhile to see if he will accept it more readily.

Like alcohol; use in moderation!
This stuff really works; I say it's like alcohol for horses. A little makes my senior horse feel pretty good, too much makes him an obnoxious jerk. If I give him the full dose, he gets very full of himself and harasses his goat companion so that I have to give her a safe zone. She's getting up in years as well and I won't tolerate him being mean to her so I keep him at a quarter dose or so and he remembers how much he likes her so there is peace in the field.I even give her a pinch every day; she hates the taste but it seems to keep her a bit more spry. Negative: not palatable to either animal. The horse eats it with his food, but until I mix it in he works around it. I hold the goat and put the pinch in her mouth and she hates me for a minute until she remembers that she likes ME.Also it is expensive, $140 or so for 6 months at full dosage. It's tough for a backyard horse keeper to justify spending this much. I get a year or more from a bucket so it's easier.

26 yo gelding is running circles around his 15 yo pasture mate!
After four weeks, my 26-year-old gelding looks awesome, has plenty of energy, and is a whole new horse. My riding buddy told me I've got A brand-new horse. His gelding couldn't keep up. After four weeks, I turned him out and he run circles around the pasture. You may have to start one quarter or half strength for the first week or two as palitability was an issue. I mix a little water in there and it will stick to the grain. he really hasn't gained any weight but acts 15 years younger.

Great supplement
One of the horses that we foster is about 38 years old and this supplement appears to help her tired digestive system - less diarrhea. Her last foul (about 18 years) has responded well to the omegas since she has less runny nose and mucous. They have never seen a vet and are pasture horses - tough old girls that seem to be benefiting from this supplement in the cold Wyoming winter!

Just what my old guy needed
I have been using the Source original powder for years on my two horses. This fall my older gelding 26 was losing muscle mass and weight fast. He was always on the stout side being part belgian. had the vet out for a colic issue (never, ever had one) and she commented on how much weight he was losing. We guessed his system was changing and at this time I decided to change to Source Senior figuring he needed the added enzymes for digestion and the extras in the Source Senior. He has improved dramatically with the feed changes and I know he is getting his Source always.

What good does it do if they won't eat it?
Have been feeding source to my entire herd. 4 are over 17 yo so I bought this one. Because the portion size is 3-4x as much, you don't get as many days out of each bucket. But the biggest thing is they don't like it. Even when mixed with sweet feed, they leave a lot of it behind. My horses are not picky eaters. Maybe if they were locked in stalls all day and bored out of their minds, they might finish it off, but theses guys will stampede in for sweet feed and not finish it because of the Source senior. So disappointed.

Recommend Source products
Been using Source products for over 30 years - from the traditional pellet to more recently FocusWT and now Focus SR. Have two seniors looking at 30 years old and they look great and don't seem to be needing the steady increase in grain that most older horses do. Used the WT to put weight on a new to me 18 year old who has since been switched to SR.

My particular TB mare has decided that she likes this, which is huge, as she is most particular about small particles in her feed, as she is inclined to not quite clean up her tub. I painstakingly 'stir' all her items well together just prior to feeding and she lets me know how well I am doing by how much she almost cleans up her tub by morning. THIS MARE is the first [of 4] that I bred, raised, trained, and she's sound, oh so fit and still working at age 25 !

This is the only probiotic that has shown any results for me. Mvp, and Probios did not work. Very satisfied with focus sr for all ages of horses. Helps save money on grain.

I just rescued a half starved Dunn gelding with Arthritis. We need to put weight on him and also wanna put him on joint supplements. The weight is not that big of an issue, because he eats really good and loves to eat too, but is thus product also good as a joint supplement or do you recommend something different? Never had an older horse and take every advice I can get. But I am not able to spend 100 s of Dollars on supplement. Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: I recommend you consider herbs. You can study the Silver Linings supplements right on horse.com. If they sell it, they are all listed and it tells you for what. I have heard very good things about that. I also recommend you consider AniMed ImmuAid which contains natural ingredients that are probiotics. I feed alfalfa, grass hay and a little bit of whole oats and bran. That is where I put the supplements, mix it up, and they munch it up. I just studied these products recently for a gelding I have that I believe has an ulcer. I am not an expert.
Will this help older horses that have had a stroke?
A shopper on Jun 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have been feeding Source and Source Focus Senior for over 30 years. I can't answer if it'd help a short who had a stroke BUT Source Senior has trace minerals and all sorts of wonderful ingredients for older horses. My present horse is 23 years old and he acts like a 2 year old but with the intelligence and calmness he has accumulated over the years. I would DEFINITELY try the Source Senior on your horse who had the stroke. Be sure to do a "loading" dose for the first week or so (double dose) and then do the recommended dosage forever. I'd also recommend that you purchased the 25 pound bucket!
source senior, 25# has an oversize charge of $11. It also states shipping weight 26 pounds. Does that mean besides the oversize charge, I have to pay shipping, too?
A shopper on Oct 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I believe if you qualify for free shipping you will get free shipping on any item but you will have to pay an FOB charge for overweight items . I love the focus senior my horses look like I sprayed them with a coat Glosser besides being good for them . When you place your order you may want to confirm your question about shipping on over weight products just to be sure .
I'm getting a older horse and I'm going to use a vitamin called the Missing Link. Would this work as good main vitamin?
bob r on Dec 12, 2014
BEST ANSWER: We have never heard of the Missing link, so do not know if is good or not. What we do know is that we have given our Arabian The Source for over 20 years now and it is something we do not want to be without. She is now 30 going on 31 years old. We started with regular Source and now she is on Senior. Another recommendation is Kool Kalories. It is a weight builder and needed with older horses.. You will not be sorry in taking on a older horse. They appreciate everything you do for them.
Any horses with Cushing taking Source to help them with their issues?
Lucy E on May 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes! Two things helped my older mare with Cushings, A selenium supplement with Vit E, and a couple of years later I added Source Senior. Both times she perked up and began to shed hair. SE and Iodine work together BUT it may be that both helped my horse because we live in an area that is SE and Iodine deficient. I currently give all my horses a half scoop of Regular Source a couple of times of week because their multi vitamin has some iodine it. According to a well know website they should get 1.5mg per 500 pounds of body weight. Good luck with your horse.
