Horses Turned Outside Without Shelter:
Tough1 Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry. However, if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours, your horse may still get wet, especially in the neck and tail areas.
When using a blanket or sheet it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures, even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat. When a blanket is too heavy, the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.
When selecting a blanket ensure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment, or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number, the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew, or rub on blankets or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group.
Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly. If a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear. For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear.
Certain types of fencing, such as barbwire, or foreign objects, such as nails, will easily tear any blanket, no matter what the denier, so always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

Mr. Ed destroyed his medium weight blanket and his pasture mate has this brand already so I am trying out the tough-1. Hope the name holds true.

I have a 17 year old quarter/mustang cross gelding, he is 16.5 hand and weights 1480 lbs and he needs a new blanket. I had bought him one when he was 3 years old but it is to small for him now.

I chose this item because I placed an order 2 weeks ago and this blanket was back ordered because you could not provide me with the color red. Well needless to say I had to reorder today because one of my horses needs a warmer blanket. I am ending up paying more for this blanket than my first order. Will I order from this company again maybe not.

High neck
Gail B on Nov 2, 2015
I have a regular neck and love it. Just tried Tough 1 for the first time. It's my favorite. It fits the best, seems well made and seems to be holding up to play. I love that it's a med/heavy and should work well until temps really plummet. Got this one with a higher neck for extra protection in rain or snow. I think my horse is too hot with a full hood even when it's really cold. Love the color choices.
Catherine C on Feb 9, 2015
A high-neck blanket is a MUST for any horse. The standard cut will always dig into their neck/withers to some degree and can cause stiffness, soreness or even pressure wounds. At the least, the place where standard blankets usually sit is right over a very important acupressure point, GV14 and excessive pressure here this can cause all sorts of energetic imbalances in the horse.

I love the high neck design of these turn-out blankets. My horses manes wont be rubbed out.
SUSAN H on Oct 11, 2014
I have one other high neck blanket that really protects my horse as well as fitting much better overall. I will only purchase High neck blankets from now on.
DEBY R on Aug 30, 2014
It's water proof and usable for a horse in turnout conditions.

my older quarter horse is a 76, blanket comes in 75 and 78. I like the higher neck and would like to try it out, but what size would I try?
A shopper on Oct 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have the same problem, so I purchased the 78. It's quite adjustable and I can snug it up enough to fit her without it being baggy. She gets cold at 50° now, I like how the extra bit of size cocoons her snug like a bug in a rug :-)
Can I change from free shipping to paid shipping to speed up the delivery?
A shopper on Jan 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You do have the option to choose what shipping method you would prefer when you are checking out .
Is the drop good? I'm looking for a blanket that comes down farther for an older horse.
A shopper on Dec 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: By 'drop' I'm guessing you mean how far in falls on either side of the horse. These blankets have excellent coverage and I'd say yes, the drop is good. I don't like the blankets that barely cover up my horses belly. My Tough-1 blankets, if pulled together under my horse's belly, meet in the middle. I'd guess that's good drop. Hope this helps.
Would this be considered a medium weight blanket?
Pat T on Mar 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use it as a heavy blanket on my Appendix mare, who does not grow much of a winter coat. It's a pretty warm blanket. If your horse is clipped or your winters are below zero it might not be heavy enough; I add a fleece liner on those rare occasions when the temps drop into single digits or less.
Do the 2 snaps in front each have 2 rings to clip to, making the front adjustable?
Debbie O on Dec 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes the front is adjustable by 2 different spots, I actually love this blanket, at first was not to sure about clips in front if they would break, but it is SO much easier with clips than having to buckle them. Love the high neck too. And it's got a nice thick padding to it. I'm on my seconder winter with it. Love it. Good buy for the money. Recommend it.
Is this blanket truly waterproof?
Diane H on Oct 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: We only used it when it was snowing and never tested it in the rain but everything under the blanket was always nice and toasty after a snowfall. It was also nice to have that little extra over the neck to help keep the snow out. It is a very nice blanket and is as waterproof as any turnout blanket we own. I think you'll be very pleased.
Do you have a neck cover that fits with this blanket?
A shopper on Feb 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My horse does not need a neck cover. The blanket rests 3-4" above the withers, and she has the choice to go inside out of the wind if she wishes. If your horse has to stay out in cold and windy or sleeting conditions, maybe a neck cover woutd be useful? Our mare is 32 and stays warm to 10-15 degrees. In a blizzard or temps to 0-5 degrees, I put another thin blanket right on top of this Tough1, just because of her age and me fussing over her. This is a marvelous blanket, very well designed.
How does this blanket stand up to constant rain? I live in a spot where it will rain up to 12 hours a day straight. Has anyone had experience with this?
A shopper on Nov 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Wow that's a lot of rain at once. I love this blanket, great quality for the price. I have never seen mine soaked through but my horse can go under shelter from the rain as well. Maybe give it an extra spray of water protection just in case. And remember no horse has ever melted from rain. Good luck. I think it's worth the try.
will this give warmth to older mare in 20-30 degree weather?
Heather R on Oct 3, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I bought one of these for last winter and used it on my 20 year old gelding. Here in Virginia, I only put this blanket on when it gets below 30. We seldom get below the teens. I was so happy with the quality of this blanket, it could have icicles hanging off the bottom sides, which would be frozen stiff, after a freezing rain, and he would be nice and dry and warm underneath. I liked it so much, I bought one for my other horse for this winter. I'm sure it will be him warm and dry.
My horse measures at 79 inches, should I get a size 78 or 80?
A shopper on Nov 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This blanket is not available in a size 80. It goes from a 78 to an 81. If your horse ends up measuring between sizes, choose the one closest to your measurement unless your horse is particularly big-bodied.

Stand your horse as square as possible. Measure from the center of the chest along the side of the body to the point of the horse's hindquarters just before the tail.
Measuring is usually best done with a helper and a soft or cloth measuring tape. Take the measurement twice to be sure.

The blanket I ordered don't way to big. Can it be exchanged?
A shopper on Feb 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you ordered this item with horse.com please call customer service for return instructions, 1-844-384-6815.
Is there the option to attached a neck?
Julia G on Oct 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There is not an option for an attachment, but the neck rides up nice and high and fits beautifully. It is the best fitting blanket I've had for my TWH mare. Best of luck
