Horses Turned Outside Without Shelter:
Tough1 Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry. However, if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours, your horse may still get wet, especially in the neck and tail areas.
When using a blanket or sheet, it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures, even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat. When a blanket is too heavy, the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough, causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.

When selecting a blanket, be sure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment, or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number, the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew or rub on blankets, or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group. Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly. If a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear.

For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material, as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear. Certain types of fencing, such as barbwire, or foreign objects, such as nails, will easily tear any blanket no matter what the denier, so always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

I like the fact you can adjust the neck. I always have trouble with the blanket sliding back this feature should help that.
Monica S on Nov 16, 2018
I liked the adjustable neck and colors available. I should be able to find it in my tack trunks.

I had previously purchased the Tough-1 600D blankets for my mare and with the super cold temperatures, I felt it necessary to get a second warmer blanket to supplement for the BITTER cold days - love TOUGH-1 products! Have for my dogs too!

This has been the best blanket I have ever purchashed very durable and the snaps were easy and blsnket was quick to put on or off. My horse is 32 years old and even though we did not have a servere weather,we did have cold rain and a little snow. He stayed warm and dry. I am buying another one for my older mare.
Also, I bought the orange/camo and had to ability to spot him anywhere in the pasture or barn.

It says crossed surcingles with elastic ends. So they are not adjustable? And what does it mean snap closure? There are buckles and snaps in the front?
A shopper on Jan 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Snaps in the front. The belly straps are adjustable and the rear straps are adjustale elastic. Seems like a high quality blanket for a good price. Front also is adjustable and has a velcro closurr.
Is this blanket waterproff?
Debbie on Jan 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Mine have been. I've had them cleaned and then re-applied waterproofing sealant. Mine have lasted up to 5 years, and going. My latest one is now going on 2 years...my horses aren't hard on things, but they wear them daily in the bad weather, in the woods, etc...no problems. I really like the 'snuggit'...it's the best. Tough-1, 1200D is awesome.
Does this blanket have any fill?
A shopper on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is like a thin layer of fill. We have been very happy with the blankets as we have four horses and we have bought several blankets. I have blankets rated for different temperatures so we are covered if freezing or just cold.
Is this blanket breathable?

does it run large?. my horse is an 80 and they offer 78 or81
Lisa R on Dec 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It runs true to size, but I would order an 81. A little bigger is better than a little smaller. More coverage and it can be adjusted in the chest to fit your horse.
is this blanket waterproof?
A shopper on Dec 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I put this blanket on my 20yr+ gelding last winter in all kinds of weather because he is always out and had zero issues with it. We loved it and the orange color was awesome for deer season too.
Are the legs straps removable or are they sewn in?
Sheryl P on Nov 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I believe they are removable. I will have to double check mine though, lol.
is this a "high neck" blanket? or mid-neck, or just normal height at withers?
sk b on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: it's pretty much a normal blanket but when you do snuggit all the way up it comes a little higher not quite mid neck but higher than normal. I had to buy this one because I have a mare with a very long body but very small chest and short so on her snugged it fits about normal because regular ones would hang completely open on her chest if it fit the length of her body.
Does this have a seamless spine ?
A shopper on Nov 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes! The spine is seamless. Very nice blanket, it won’t disappoint.
my horses measures a 78, do I dare go 81? There is a gap in there from 78 - 81.
BARB M on Dec 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Stand your horse as square as possible. Measure from the center of the chest along the side of the body to the point of the horse's hindquarters just before the tail. If your horse ends up measuring between sizes, choose the one closest to your measurement unless your horse is particularly big-bodied.
Measuring is usually best done with a helper and a soft or cloth measuring tape. Take the measurement twice to be sure.

Is this 250 or 300g fill?
A shopper on Nov 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The blanket I ordered was a 250g fill. I only use these blankets when the temp drops to 25 or below cuz it is a very warm blanket for out area. W. WA.
The blanket does hold up well even with our "rollers" I would definately buy again :)

Tough-1 1200D Snuggit Tough Timber Blanket...Is this a mid weight blanket?
suzy H on Nov 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is a medium weight blanket.
I need a turn out blanket for my quarterhorse draft mix breed mare she is about 70 " she has a yearling colt who is frisky and likes to bite off her bare back pad. So I need a strong denier but the filling shouldn't be more than 250g? (Medium warmth) we go horse camping in the mountains here but I don't think it falls much below 25-30 degrees on the very coldest nights. Any suggestions? I also need to get the yearling colt (he's 15 months old and growing) a blanket as well he's about a size 60 inch from what I could measure thanks
A shopper on Jan 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This item is 1200D. However i will say if the horse she is pastured with is ruff I would recommend something with a higher denier. All the blankets we carry that are under warranty will not cover a horse related problem. so if the blanket is ripped due to biting rolling, etc the manufacturer will not cover. We carry many different turnouts in a size 60 as well. you may want to look at item E012035.
How is measurement taken for horse blankets? From center of chest, or the withers?
cindy on Nov 19, 2014
When measuring size for blanket...do you measure from the center of chest to flanks end or from the withers?? thank you
cindy on Nov 16, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Measure your horse for the correct blanket size by following these easy guidelines:
1) Stand your horse square.
2) Place your measuring tape at the center of the chest.
3) Measure from the middle of the chest to the center of the tail one side. and that is the horse's blanket size.
How warm is this going to keep my horse. She lives in ohio?
A shopper on Nov 13, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This blanket is 300g and is recommended for temperatures around 0-10 degrees Fahrenheit.
We don't get snow, we get cold temps in the 20's but rarely and if we do not super long periods, our winter are fairly mild we are in the valley in Northern California. Our horses have stalls but it is a open barn so some shelter. would this in your opinion be warm enough, she doesn't have a massive winter coat coming in?
