Good quality, looks nice
Only issue I had is the leather strap needs more holes to make it fit. I added 3 extra holes on each side about an inch apart. Now it fits all the mares. This is a great product for my mares that become hard to catch after foaling. I can leave it on them in the pasture without worrying about them getting hung up.

Nice halter
I had this halter for my first horse..we had an accident in the stall and the leather broke right away..very glad! The halter ran a little big and I need to put two extra holes in the leather to fit right..I think I had a large for my two quarter horses and it ran big..very nice halter..little more expensive than where I got mine..probably paid $20 at southern states.

Thin the leather
When I got this I checked out the other review and before I turned my QH out I thinned a section of the leather crown because of their review and the leather felt a little thick...so far my belle hasn't gotten caught but I have a feeling that if she does then the part that I thinned will break.....but remember to thin the leather crown before you use this!!!!!

Did not break!!!
We had a disaster with one of these halters, a horse was able to pull a wooden fence post out of the ground, break 6 boards and run around the pasture terrified with the post dragging behind, the snap of the lead rope finally broke! The horse was so terrified he ran through 3 SETS of wooden fences. I was VERY upset that the leather halter did not break! The halters run way large, we use a plain leather halter with a breakaway fuse on that horse now. I know, he's a jerk, but the point is that's why he had the leather breakaway on. Thank goodness for wooden fences and minimal injuries!

There good quality and easy to snap on and off compared to other breakaway halters. I highly recommend them, they are the only ones I'll use.

This is a decent halter with a safer breakaway feature. They last for years.

I need xl halter, will this adjust to fit his big head?
Rick M on Apr 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would guess yes. I have a rather large headed quarter horse (other items, cinch, breast strap, have to be draft horse size). I have this adjusted on the smallest possible, and it is plenty roomy. it's a really good halter. Order extra leather breakaway straps.
What is the point of a breakaway halter? What does it do?
Alyssa C on Oct 4, 2015
BEST ANSWER: A break-away halter gives your horse the benefits of a leather halter with the resilience of a nylon halter. The leather strap at the top will break if the horse sets back or puts enough pressure on it. It is important for it to break in these situations so that it will not injure the horse badly. Personally, I always use a leather or break away halter in the trailer because if anything happens, leather is much easier to cut than nylon. Leather halters tend to dry-rot and/or break in places other than the crown piece so the nylon halters with break away pieces are much more practical for every day use.
are these made with solid brass fittings?
becky d on Apr 28, 2015
